New cardiology wing breaks ground at Winterfield Medical Center

Ground was broken on July 9 for a new cardiovascular wing at Winterfield Medical Center. The four-story building will add four catheterisation labs, two hybrid operating rooms, a dedicated cardiac imaging suite, and 48 inpatient beds.

Completion is scheduled for spring 2029.

Why now

Cardiac catheterisation volume at the Medical Center has risen 44 percent since 2019, against two labs that were commissioned in 2004. The current constraint is not clinical staffing; it is that there are two rooms and they are both busy.

The practical consequence is that non-urgent procedures are scheduled several weeks out, and that a genuinely urgent case arriving mid-afternoon displaces someone who has already waited.

What is being built

• Four catheterisation laboratories, replacing the existing two.
• Two hybrid operating rooms for structural heart procedures.
• A cardiac imaging suite with dedicated CT and MRI.
• 48 inpatient beds, all single rooms.
• An outpatient clinic and rehabilitation gym on the ground floor.

Disruption during construction

The site is the existing east car park. That car park closes in September, and roughly 340 spaces move to a temporary lot on Fourth Avenue with a shuttle every eight minutes.

The main entrance is unaffected. The emergency department entrance is unaffected. Deliveries move to the north side from September, which will change the route service vehicles take through the site but not any route used by patients or visitors.

Construction noise is expected to be significant during the piling phase, currently scheduled for October and November. Wards on the east face of the main building will be affected, and patients whose stay is elective and flexible will be offered a west-facing room where one is available.
